典型艾滋病有三个基本特征
1.严重的细胞免疫缺陷，特别是CD4T淋巴细胞缺陷；
2.发生各种恶性肿瘤，特别是卡波济肉瘤（Kaposissarcoma，简称KS)。64%的艾滋病患者患有PCP，KS在同性恋和非洲艾滋病患者中发病率较高。AIDS患者PCP和KS死亡率高。
3.感染各种致命机会（opportunisticinfection）特别是卡氏肺囊虫肺炎（PneumocystisCarinipneumonia 简称PCP)；
